What is the food budget when spending time in Madinah?

Supermarket in Madinah with fixed prices

When traveling, it's always good to know what to expect once there. In this micro-article, we will give you an idea of the reality of life in Madinah.

To this question, we would answer that experiences are very different from one individual to another. Some people spend very little money because they came for a specific goal (for example, studying Islamic sciences) while others are looking to relax and therefore have a larger budget.

Still, Saudi Arabia remains (I think) a relatively expensive country. At a restaurant, for a simple fast-food menu (burger + fries + drink) you should count around 20-25 Riyals (1 Riyal ~ 0.23 Euro).

Rice remains an economical solution: you should count an average of 6 Riyals for a tray suitable for 2-3 people. A large tray of beef as a side dish or sauce for this rice is around 18 Riyals.

Some common prices to give you an idea:

  • A 1.5L bottle of water costs 2 Riyals
  • A kg of bananas 5 Riyals
  • A kg of onions around 5 Riyals
  • Same for a kg of potatoes...

  • Some economical tips

Note that on Mondays and Thursdays, when fasting, it is possible to get a food basket in the Prophet's Mosque (peace and blessings be upon him).

Finally, it is wise when doing your grocery shopping (and if you have the time!) to go shopping in the same places as the Saudis because that's where the prices are the most attractive. In Madinah, there is a store where all products are at 5.75 Riyals or 11.50 Riyals.

IMPORTANT NOTE: it is wise to buy gifts for the family there because there are many interesting things. And I take this opportunity to remind everyone that the gift budget is usually a real hole in the wallet hahaha.

To buy fruits and vegetables in Saudi Arabia, there is a large market in Madinah - Madina Central Market - and the prices there are very attractive.

That's all for this very short article which I hope has given you a small glimpse into the cost of life in Madinah.
