Do not despise any good, even a smiling face
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Do not despise any good deed, even meeting your brother with a cheerful face."

(Reported by Muslim)
This hadith is brief, yet it corrects a common mistake: thinking that good only counts when it is large, visible, or difficult. In reality, a door to good may be quiet: a smile, a warm salam, a welcoming face, a gentle word, or a presence that reassures someone.
Good is not always spectacular
Some people wait until they have more wealth, more knowledge, or more time before they begin doing good. But the Prophet ﷺ teaches us not to underestimate simple acts.
A sincere smile can lighten sadness. A gentle welcome can soften hearts. A kind expression can make someone feel that they are not alone.
The face speaks before the tongue
Before we even say a word, our face communicates something. It can invite, close the door, reassure, or hurt. This is why scholars have often reminded us that good companionship is not limited to major statements: it begins with one's attitude.
Meeting your brother with a cheerful face is therefore not merely social politeness. It is a way of showing mercy, preserving bonds, and keeping harshness from settling between people.
An accessible act of worship
Not everyone has the same means, but everyone can seek a share of good within reach. A smile costs nothing, yet it may weigh heavily when it is done sincerely for Allah.
The believer should not wait for the perfect opportunity to be useful. He takes the small openings: answering gently, giving salam first, listening without belittling, encouraging without humiliating, and bringing calm when he can.
In summary
This hadith teaches us to broaden our view of good. Smiling, welcoming others, and showing gentleness are not minor details: they are signs of noble character.
So do not despise any good. It may be that something very simple, done sincerely, is immense with Allah.
